U.S. Senator Tim Johnson (D-SD) today announced that the Winner School District has been honored by the Department of Defense. Winner has been awarded the 2008 Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award in recognition of their support of employees serving in the National Guard and Reserve. |

Austin, TX, Mayor Will Wynn Awarded High Honor from Department of Defense for Policies Supporting Veterans, Military Service Men, Women |

Wynn and the city were given the award for policies that support national guardsmen and reservists, such as 15-month differential pay to active employees of the Guard and Reserve. Additionally, the city was recognized for creating a position dedicated solely to helping service members assimilate themselves back into employment after returning from deployment. |

Austin Ranks Among Best in Nation for Military Personnel |

David Walraven has two jobs: He's a security guard at Austin's City Hall, and he serves his country. "I wanted to join the Army Reserves, so I did," Walraven said. Walraven spent the last six months going through basic training in Oklahoma and South Carolina. During that time, one thing he didn't have to worry about was his job back in Austin. |

The Choctaw Nation is among the Department of Defense's 2008 Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award recipients ... The tribe has hosted sendoff and welcome-home events for the 1-180th Infantry Battalion, which is based in Durant; sent an ultrasound machine to Iraq to be used to check troops for embedded shrapnel; provided thousands of care packages; and made buses, drivers and fuel available to bring troops home for the holidays last Christmas. |
