Regional Emergency Medical Services Authority (REMSA), a paramedic ambulance service, located in Reno, Nevada, is a recipient of the 2008 Secretary of Defense Freedom Award in the category of Small Business. A recipient of the ESGR Pro Patria Award, REMSA actively recruits and hires members of the National Guard and Reserve. Not only does the organization offer differential pay for the duration of an employee’s deployment, but REMSA also provides continuation of all benefits for service members and their families who are deployed for more than one year. USERRA is incorporated into the training of all supervisors and managers organization-wide. REMSA supports their deployed employees by doing everything from sending care packages and notes of support to assuring them that their families will be supported in their absence. Families are looked after personally by the Human Resources Director, Cindy Davis, and given the highest priority. The families of deployed service members are warmly embraced and invited to company gatherings such as picnics and the annual Christmas party. Benefits including counseling services, tuition reimbursement and fitness allowances are provided for all families of deployed service members. As President of the Nevada Human Resources Association, Ms. Davis takes REMSA’s philosophy of full support to Guard and Reserve employees to the members of NHRA, increasing the awareness of ESGR and its mission. REMSA gives preference to those with military experience in their hiring process as well as utilizes an active recruiting program.
